Dishman Hills Natural Area
Photos by Brad Sondahl
The Dishman Hills Natural area starts with an urban landscaped
park with a retreat center and play area.
On the Saturday I visited, the parking lot was full,
but everyone was in the urban park--the trails were empty.
At the west end of the park the trail system starts.
There has been some work on preventing erosion on the trails by the Boy
Scouts. Unfortunately, enough erosion around some of the railroad ties
has occurred to make them harder to walk on than if the trail were left
natural... There is a topological map available at the DHNRCA
website. There are many small trails not on the map, so you need
to keep aware of your path to return easily, as the area is over
500 acres... Major trail intersections have signs to help reorient
you.
In the spring wildflowers are common.
Rocky overhangs and ridges run throughout the park, making
for lots of up and down to the trails.

Several small ponds are nestled onto the site, one with
a scenic overlook platform...
